Two Renoir Paintings Stolen From French Riviera Museum

Two Pierre-Auguste Renoir masterpieces were stolen Tuesday morning from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a picturesque town on France's French Riviera. The thieves, who broke in just before 6 a.m., forced their way into the building through a hole cut in the garden fence and then crept inside through a ground-floor window. Police arrived at the scene about five minutes later, but the men had already taken four paintings, leaving two behind in the garden.

Among the stolen works are "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well". The recovered paintings are "Portrait of Madame Pichon" and "Coco Reading", which features Renoir's son Claude. The museum, housed in the Domaine des Collettes, the house where Renoir lived in his final years, is currently displaying a collection of the artist's paintings, sculptures, photographs, and furniture.

The incident has reignited debates about the need for enhanced security measures in French museums. French authorities are currently investigating the theft, which was carried out by an organized gang, and have not yet made any arrests. The two missing paintings, "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well", were part of the museum's loan from the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

The museum's surveillance system captured the crime, providing valuable evidence for the ongoing investigation.
