Turning historic houses into boutique hotels

Korea is seeking to invigorate its historic estates by converting centuries-old buildings into boutique hotels, in an effort to stimulate regional tourism and rejuvenate underperforming local economies. On Tuesday, the National Heritage Service unveiled two major plans to repurpose quiet historical sites into lively cultural centers: the "National Heritage Stay" and the "Heritage-Based Destination Regeneration" initiatives.

The lodging proposal entails government authorities selecting around ten historic residences to undergo modern renovations. These prestigious family homes, frequently associated with aristocratic families from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), will be equipped with modern conveniences such as heating, air conditioning, and contemporary plumbing, while preserving their original wooden structures and architectural style.

This strategy echoes Spain's Paradores, a state-run network of luxury hotels founded in 1928 that repurposed historic castles, monasteries, and fortresses into lucrative tourist destinations. Korea intends to create a unified national hospitality brand centered around its heritage sites.
