Transport Minister admits Tema Port congestion, promises infrastructure upgrades

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has admitted to persistent congestion at the Tema Port, attributing the issue partly to infrastructure not keeping pace with rising cargo volumes. During a visit to the Meridian Port Services Terminal at the port, Mr. Nikpe discussed potential solutions with the management. "Container congestions in the port are a challenge, and I believe this worries all of us, including you," he stated.

While the development of Terminal 3 has expanded the port's capacity, Mr. Nikpe noted that the infrastructure connecting the facility to the rest of the transport network had not been similarly upgraded. To address this, government is considering upgrades to roads and harbor routes, as well as the construction of additional berths to accommodate more vessels.

The Transport Minister assured port operators and stakeholders that the government will fast-track these proposed interventions to alleviate congestion and improve the port's efficiency, aiming to maintain Ghana's status as a preferred destination for maritime trade.
