Thailand to bring in 10,000 Sri Lankan workers to ease shortages

Thailand's Cabinet has approved two labor agreements with Sri Lanka, aiming to bring in 10,000 Sri Lankan workers to address shortages in certain Thai labor markets. The agreements, signed on September 8, include a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on labor cooperation and a separate employment agreement for Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Capt Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn stated that the system will manage the entire recruitment process, from worker selection and contracts to health checks, legal entry, employment, and return to Sri Lanka. This initiative follows years of discussions between the two nations and aims to create a transparent, monitored system for worker recruitment and employment.

The MOU will cover labor market information exchange, legal policies, skills development, and efforts to combat illegal recruitment and human trafficking. The employment agreement outlines the recruitment and selection process, including employer details, worker qualifications, employment conditions, and pay. Workers will receive contracts before traveling to Thailand, which must be signed directly with their employers.

Sri Lankan workers will receive fair and equal treatment, as well as rights and benefits under their contracts and Thai labor law. They must undergo legal entry, obtain work permits, and provide health insurance before employment. Employment contracts initially run for two years, with the possibility of extension. Upon contract completion, workers must return to Sri Lanka, and employers are responsible for their repatriation costs.
