Thai FM meets Israeli ambassador over tourist conduct concerns

Bangkok, September 8, 2026 — Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow addressed growing concerns surrounding the conduct of Israeli tourists and business operators in the country during a meeting with Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm, according to a report by Khaosod English. Foreign Minister Phuangketkeow, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized that Thailand will strictly enforce its laws against any foreign national violating them, regardless of nationality.

The meeting focused on incidents involving Israeli nationals residing, doing business, or traveling in Thailand, which have raised public concern. Sihasak stated that Thai authorities will take stringent action against Israeli nationals who stay long-term in the country to operate businesses and violate Thai law. However, he clarified that this measure is not discriminatory but aimed at enforcing the law uniformly.

Sihasak also expressed concerns about the behavior of certain Israeli tourists, both short-term and long-term visitors, which has impacted local sentiment, customs, and community life, particularly in Phang Nga and Phuket, where significant Israeli communities have formed. He stressed that Thailand welcomes tourists but expects them to respect Thai culture and traditions, just as Thai tourists should respect the customs and values of the countries they visit.

The ambassador acknowledged the issues and had already initiated outreach efforts, according to Sihasak. However, he urged Israel to intensify its efforts and collaborate closely with Thai authorities to resolve the matter. Failure to address this issue could negatively impact bilateral relations, the Foreign Minister added.

Thailand and Israel have a cooperative relationship in various sectors, including agriculture and labor. Currently, over 60,000 Thai workers are employed in Israel. During the meeting, the Israeli ambassador proposed preparing and disseminating guidance on the expected behavior of Israeli visitors in Thailand through Israeli diplomatic channels, tour companies, and airlines.

Ambassador Fisher-Kamm highlighted the importance of tourism to Thailand, emphasizing that visitors must respect Thailand's dignity and honor, not just contribute to its economy.
