'Standing up for freedom': British politicians react to UK sanctions on Israeli settlements

The UK government announced on Tuesday that it will ban trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, calling them "settler terrorists" engaged in ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confirmed that the UK will prohibit imports of all goods from these settlements, along with certain services such as financing, construction, infrastructure, real estate, and advertising.

He stated that France and Canada will also join the ban on trade with Israeli settlements. This decision represents a significant tightening of Britain's stance towards Israel, whose actions in the West Bank have drawn widespread international criticism due to settlement construction and the perceived ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Under Netanyahu's government, settlement construction has increased dramatically in the West Bank, which is considered illegal by the international community and stands in the way of a Palestinian state. Foreign Secretary Miliband emphasized the government's stance that there is indeed ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by settler terrorists, noting the destruction of homes, roads, and public infrastructure, as well as the displacement of families.

The ban on trade is expected to be in effect within six to nine months. Additionally, Miliband announced that Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden will support further actions, while the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, and Norway have either banned goods from settlements or are in the process of doing so.

The UK, traditionally a close ally of Israel, recognized Palestinian statehood last year in an effort to revive efforts towards a two-state solution. The government has previously sanctioned some Israeli settlers and illegal outposts for their violent actions against Palestinians and for illegal development in the West Bank. Prime Minister Burnham expressed concerns about an Israeli plan to cut the West Bank in two, which could undermine prospects for a future Palestinian state.

While this move is likely to be welcomed by many Labour supporters and MPs, it has also faced criticism from some within the party, who fear it might bolster support for Netanyahu and lead to attacks on British Jews. Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the ban a "grave miscalculation" and interference in Israel's internal affairs, stating that it would be a decision against the right side of history.

Israeli ministers, particularly hard-line officials, also condemned the UK's stance, with some urging Netanyahu to recognize Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, a British territory in the South Atlantic. The U.S. has voiced concerns over the ban, with the U.S. ambassador to Israel warning of potential repercussions and retaliations.

Some U.S. states have laws that prohibit contracts or investments with boycotts of Israeli firms, including those based in the West Bank. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham discussed the UK's commitment to achieving peace and security in the region and the two-state solution during a phone call with US President Donald Trump, but no details were given on Trump's response.
