Singapore construction firms brace for potential disruptions as haze risk lingers

Singapore's construction firms are taking proactive measures to counter potential productivity losses and work disruptions resulting from the city-state's deteriorating air quality. As of late September, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reached unhealthy levels for the first time in nearly three years, peaking at 116 on September 4.

However, it has since eased to a moderate 69 by Tuesday morning, though the risk remains. The National Environment Agency (NEA) anticipates further deterioration due to persistent dry weather and fires in neighboring Indonesia. This has prompted contractors to develop contingency plans, particularly for physically demanding outdoor tasks that may need to be delayed or rescheduled.

Kenneth Siew, a committee chair at the Singapore Contractors Association Limited (SCAL), explained that companies are re-sequencing construction timelines and redistributing manpower to minimize disruptions. Some developers, such as Lum Chang Creations and City Developments Limited, have not yet experienced significant delays but are preparing to rotate workers, reduce strenuous activities, and provide N95 masks if the air quality worsens.

The haze is expected to have varying impacts depending on project stages, with SCAL prepared to engage stakeholders on potential contractual considerations if timelines are significantly affected.
