Selection of schools after BECE results a backward approach – Abuakwa South MP

Abuakwa South Member of Parliament Dr Kingsley Agyemang has criticized the government's decision to allow students to choose senior high schools after receiving their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, deeming it a "backward approach". This policy has led to significant challenges for parents and candidates, with many students failing to secure places in their chosen schools due to the large number of unsuccessful placements.

Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on September 7, Agyemang highlighted that the BECE performance was disappointing, with a high number of candidates unplaced in their selected schools. He had previously warned that revealing results before selecting schools would result in a rush for Category A institutions, which has now materialized.

Agyemang argued that the policy would have been more effective if schools were not categorized and all institutions had an equal opportunity for selection. He maintained that the current predicament was foreseeable and that the government had disregarded earlier warnings about the policy's potential consequences. The placement difficulties have exacerbated compared to the previous year, which Agyemang described as chaotic, and he called for a review of the selection and placement process to ensure students' preferences align better with available vacancies and school categories.
