Sachsen-Anhalt: Siegmund soll nicht Vorsitzender der Ministerpräsidenten werden

In the German state of Sachsen-Anhalt, Minister-President Sven Schulze (CDU) is requesting that the upcoming Minister President Conference (MPK) chairmanship be awarded to a different federal state starting from October. This comes after the recent state election and the subsequent formation of the government, which remains uncertain.

Schulze wrote in a letter to the current MPK chair, German Rhineland-Palatinate Minister-President Gordon Schnieder (CDU), stating that overseeing the conference from October 1 would not be appropriate due to the election results, the resulting seat distribution in the Landtag, the constitution on October 6, and the uncertainty around government formation in Sachsen-Anhalt.

AfD narrowly secured nearly an absolute majority in the state election on Sunday, making it difficult for other parties to form a stable government. Discussions are ongoing, with the outcome uncertain. However, it is highly likely that Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD's top candidate, will lead the next government. Schulze emphasizes the need for "technical and content-related preparation and implementation of the annual MPK" in a letter to Schnieder.

The Land had recently renovated and technically equipped its Sachsen-Anhalt representation in Berlin to host the conference starting from autumn. The Minister Presidents Conference had decided in its March 12 meeting that Sachsen-Anhalt would chair the annual round for one year, starting from October 1. The conference's members discuss their positions and coordinate with the federal government and chancellor.

However, ministers had previously expressed concern that the first AfD Minister President in German history should also chair the MPK.
