Russia and North Korea open first road bridge across their borders—marking a ‘significant event’ in ‘expansion of transport infrastructure’

On Monday, Russia and North Korea inaugurated the first road bridge crossing their shared border, marking a significant expansion of their transport infrastructure. The 1-kilometer-long bridge, named after the late Soviet military officer Yakov Novichenko, connects the North Korean cities of Rason and the Russian city of Khasan.

Built over the Tumen River, it features two lanes capable of accommodating up to 300 vehicles daily, and a newly constructed border crossing point. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song attended the inauguration via video link.

While the bridge's opening is celebrated as a boost for bilateral cooperation, some experts question its impact on trade and people movement, as 98% of North Korea's external trade in 2025 still goes through China. The South Korean government reports 17 active road and rail links across the North Korea-China border, while concerns persist about potential misuse of the bridge for military equipment or traffic violations of U.N. resolutions against North Korea's nuclear program.

Despite this, North Korea and Russia, already connected by a railway bridge and air service, agreed to build the bridge in 2024, with construction beginning the previous year.
