Rubio heads to Latin America to push US counter-drug priorities with Trump-friendly leaders

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarks on a three-nation tour of Latin America to push for American counter-drug priorities with right-wing-friendly leaders. The Trump administration is intensifying military operations to combat drug trafficking and strengthen economic ties in the Western Hemisphere. Just a week after a massive oil deal with Venezuela following a U.S. military operation that ousted President Nicolás Maduro, Rubio heads to Colombia to meet President Abelardo de la Espriella.

De la Espriella, part of a new generation of conservative leaders, supports Trump's approach to issues such as drugs, immigration, and energy. Rubio stated that the administration aims to solidify trade deals and aligns with U.S. interests in the region. He did not visit Venezuela due to time constraints and defended the recent oil deal, stating that the oil fields were once dominated by China, Russia, and Iran but have not been tapped for production, which will benefit the Venezuelan people through a democratically elected government.

The tour coincides with increased efforts by Latin American allies to fight drug trafficking, as evidenced by the recent sinking of an Ecuadorian vessel accused of links to the criminal group Los Choneros. The U.S. has intensified its operations in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean, coinciding with a crackdown on migrants from Latin America.
