Rubio Arrives in Colombia as Washington Seeks New Strategic Alliance

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in Barranquilla on Tuesday for a crucial meeting with Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella. This marks the first official visit to Colombia by Rubio since taking on his role and represents one of the first major bilateral meetings between the Trump administration and De La Espriella's government, which assumed power on August 7.

The primary goal of the visit is to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two nations, focusing on addressing security, stability, and development challenges across the hemisphere. The meeting is expected to take place at approximately 3 p.m., following Rubio's arrival around 1 p.m. Rubio will then meet U.S. Embassy personnel later in the day.

The discussions are anticipated to be dominated by security concerns, with cooperation against narcoterrorism being a key objective. For De La Espriella's administration, the visit offers an opportunity to move beyond the previous government's "total peace" policy and anti-U.S. rhetoric. Both nations are also expected to discuss expanding military cooperation and relations with neighboring Venezuela.

Economic cooperation, including potential agreements on civilian nuclear energy and critical minerals, could also form a significant part of the discussions. The visit comes amid heightened security efforts in Colombia, including Colombia's entry into the 'Shield of the Americas' and increased aerial glyphosate spraying.
