Raising Independent Kids Shouldn’t Be This Hard

A Virginia mother named Karyann Parkinson faced criminal charges after allowing her 5-year-old son to walk to a pond by himself to collect goose feathers. The incident occurred in June, when Parkinson, who was eight months pregnant and preparing for the bar exam, took her son on a bike ride to the pond. Her son, who had successfully navigated the area multiple times, asked to return alone to retrieve more feathers.

A concerned passerby reported him to a security guard, who then alerted the police. Within days, child protective services became involved and Parkinson was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, placing her on a seven-year child-abuse-and-neglect registry. The case has sparked debate about the increasing expectations placed on parents, particularly mothers, to constantly supervise their children.

Critics argue that society has created a vise of financial demands and inflated expectations around parenting, leaving parents feeling guilty even when children are not harmed. Despite the risks associated with independence, some parents believe that allowing children to experience appropriate levels of challenge and risk is crucial for their development.
