Qatar targets $150m export-ready sovereign UAV industry by 2032

Qatar is aiming to establish a $150m sovereign UAV industry by 2032, according to Dr Bidur Khanal, head of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Doha for Science & Technology (UDST). This goal was unveiled during a keynote presentation on air mobility, highlighting the potential of UAVs in Qatar's expanding logistics market, which is projected to reach $1.36bn globally by 2032.

Khanal emphasized that drones are vital for Qatar's strategic and operational needs, particularly given the country's vast maritime borders and high-density air traffic. They provide crucial ISR capabilities and counter-drone defence systems. The UAV market's growth is supported by national initiatives like the Tasmu Digital Valley programme, which targets an annual growth rate of around 13% through 2026.

Khanal outlined a phased industrial roadmap, starting with co-production agreements and the implementation of executive regulations under Law No 10 of 2026, followed by the establishment of an export-ready sovereign UAV product line by 2030 to 2032. The strategy also includes commercial licensing for inspection and delivery drones.

While scaling domestic assembly presents operational challenges, such as complex flight deconfliction due to Qatar's congested airspace, Khanal stressed that closing talent and supply chain gaps is critical. UDST is addressing this by integrating modular drone control architecture into its aeronautical curriculum, ensuring students graduate with the skills to manufacture and code these systems.

All UAV operations in Qatar are strictly regulated by the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), which requires three-year renewable licenses under Law No 10 of 2026.
