Qatar Charity treats blindness-causing diseases through specialised surgeries in Nigeria

Qatar Charity, in collaboration with Nigerian health ministries and a medical clinic, completed 1,074 eye surgeries in northern Nigeria, restoring sight to 1,018 beneficiaries. The "Ibsar" (Eyesight) Initiative aims to combat vision loss diseases through specialised surgeries and improved access to eye care. The campaign also distributed 270 white canes to visually impaired individuals whose sight couldn't be restored surgically.

Over 4,000 men, women, children, and older adults underwent screenings, and 2,912 received free medication, consultations, and medical advice. Notably, 20 children, including two under five years old, benefited from the surgeries. Approximately 98% of the procedures addressed cataract-related blindness. The campaign targeted Niger and Yobe States, home to about 7.87 million people, where many lack access to specialised healthcare.

Before the surgeries, the team conducted seven days of community-based screenings in each state. Irshad Ali Shekh, a Qatar Charity programmes manager, emphasized that "Sight is a right, not a privilege" and pledged continued cooperation with governments and partners to strengthen healthcare services and reduce preventable blindness.

The campaign officially launched in Niger State in late July 2026, with support from Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba. Beneficiaries, like 10-year-old Usman Muhammad, regained their sight and are set to return to school. This intervention underscores Qatar Charity's commitment to supporting eye health services and reducing preventable blindness in Nigeria.
