Putera MIC seeks government pathways for top-performing students with 8A or 9A grades, provided schools offer a maximum of 10 subjects. Petaling Jaya: Students who achieve all A grades should not miss out on automatic entry into the Matriculation Programme solely because their school does not offer 10 subjects, stated Putera MIC National Chief Shatesh Kumar Sangar.

This reform is among three urgent educational reforms the government must address to ensure a more equitable education system for the younger generation. For the 2026/2027 session, the Ministry of Education (KPM) announced that all 6,717 SPM 2025 candidates who obtained 10A and above plus applied for the Matriculation Programme will be given places automatically, regardless of race and background.

The Putera MIC also wants the government to publish annual data on the number of Matriculation Programme applications, offers, appeals, and admissions by race and B40 category. In the second reform, Shatesh proposes the government to re-evaluate the position of the pre-university pathway by harmonizing related programs under the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

At this point, both Matriculation Programme and STPM are within the KPM ecosystem, while the public university foundation program is under MOHE. According to Putera MIC, this harmonization would enable the pre-university admission, UPU, and university capacity planning to be designed in a more structured and coherent ecosystem. Matriculation Programme was introduced in 1998, and Shatesh said its structure should be re-evaluated after nearly three decades.

Meanwhile, Putera MIC also demands clarification from KPM regarding the development of the recently launched Moral Education study. The directive, issued by the Education Minister on May 3, involves research and improvement of the structure of examinations, marking, and student outcomes. "Now the question is clear: what is the status of this investigation?

Will the new examination format, marking method, and Moral Education structure be introduced for 2027?" Shatesh asked. Shatesh noted that the education system should not remain unchanged merely because it has been used for a long time if there are weaknesses to be fixed. "When there is a weakness, we reform. When there is injustice, we correct it. The future of the young must be paramount," he said.
