PS Sing’Oei apologises to Burundian community, pledges support for those headed home

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Dr. Korir Sing’Oei issued a formal apology to Burundian nationals residing in Kenya following recent attacks that resulted from the government's crackdown on undocumented foreign traders. The attacks caused chaos at the Burundi embassy in Nairobi, where many Burundians were rushing to secure necessary documents for their stay or departure.

Amid this crisis, Sing’Oei visited the embassy and expressed his regret for the security situation and the attacks on Burundians by some Kenyans who were convinced by President William Ruto's directive. Emphasizing that many Burundians have lived peacefully with Kenyans for years, Sing’Oei stressed that the government's directive was specifically aimed at those operating small businesses without proper licenses.

He admitted that lack of clear communication led to misunderstandings, resulting in attacks by neighbors and friends who did not fully understand the directive. Apologizing for the harm caused, Sing’Oei reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensure Burundian nationals coexist peacefully with Kenyans. He urged affected residents to ensure they hold valid documents, business licenses, and proper registrations to avoid harassment.

The government assured the community of enhanced security measures in areas with substantial Burundian populations and promised protection from harassment and attacks. Officials at the embassy reported that most Burundians had not returned to their workplaces in urban centers, including Homa Bay, Migori, Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisii, and Kiambu.
