Police investigate death of teen girl found in apartment stairwell

An 18-year-old male has been detained in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl found in an apartment stairwell last week in Vantaa's Asola neighbourhood. Police are investigating the incident, which they have classified under the criminal headings of gross negligent homicide, child rape, and narcotics crimes. Lead investigator Detective Chief Inspector Marko Särkkä stated that the perpetrator and victim were previously acquainted.

Police found the victim's body in the suspect's apartment building and immediately launched an investigation on the scene. No signs of violence were observed on the victim, and the cause of death is under investigation. The role of drugs is also being examined. The suspect was ordered into remand custody on probable grounds, with the court noting that the suspected crimes occurred between August 31 and September 3, the night the victim was found.

Police have already questioned the suspect but would not disclose the nature of the questioning. Gross negligent homicide, for which the maximum penalty is six years in prison, involves causing another person's death by gross negligence. Child rape, punishable by up to ten years in prison, is defined as sexual intercourse with a child under 16. The suspect has no prior criminal record, and the deadline for bringing charges is December 3.
