Police arrest suspects over murder, bank robberies, gold-related attacks

Police have detained individuals accused of involvement in a murder, attempted bank robberies, and gold-related attacks across the Western and Ashanti regions. Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, disclosed that intelligence-led operations throughout the country have resulted in seven significant breakthroughs.

Among those arrested is Abraham Awundok, 32, who is being held for the alleged murder of Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who went missing in April 2026. Evidence suggests Awundok, a former errand boy for the couple, killed them, stole their belongings, and fled to the UAE. He was deported back to Ghana in August 2026. Awundok has confessed to the murders during questioning and is currently in custody.

The police thwarted a planned bank robbery in Labone, Accra, where two suspects were killed, another fled, and one was apprehended. This operation was prompted by intelligence concerning a robbery syndicate that monitored bank customers and targeted banks in the Greater Accra and Tema areas. Suspects Harrison Chinedu and Dan, armed with pistols, were identified as gang leaders. Their plans were disrupted by police surveillance, resulting in the recovery of 13 vehicle registration numbers and a firearm.

In another operation, five suspects, including Clinton Mawuli, 33, and Richmond Mensah, 47, were arrested for the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, near Agona Fie. Recovered items included pistols, ammunition, and personal items used in the crime. Special teams have been deployed to enhance security in these regions to ensure residents can continue their activities without disruption.
