Petronas-Petros deal still up in the air, says analyst

Petronas and Petros, two major entities in the oil and gas industry, remain at odds over several underlying legal and commercial issues, according to economist Harridon Suffian. While recent reports suggest progress in resolving their long-standing dispute, Suffian warns that these indications should be viewed with caution. The core issues revolve around the extent of Sarawak's control over its oil and gas resources and the financial returns the state is entitled to based on its reserves and production.

Petros, appointed by Sarawak as the gas aggregator for the domestic market, and Petronas, which continues to assert its national authority under the Petroleum Development Act 1974, have yet to reach a consensus on these matters. Despite multiple claims and repeated assertions of resolution, the dispute persists, with both sides filing petitions in the Federal Court seeking clarity on the governing laws and their respective rights and responsibilities.

While political agreements have been reached and signed, indicating a broad framework for resolving the predicament, detailed terms and conditions, including financial returns and gas distribution volumes, remain unresolved. The existence of ongoing court cases highlights the complexity of the issues at hand and suggests that a definitive settlement may still be some time away.
