Perak Fire Dept calls for age limits on children joining high-risk mountain expeditions

Gerik, September 8 — The Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has urged authorities to examine the existing guidelines on the age limit for children participating in high-risk mountain expeditions and challenging hiking routes. JBPM director Datuk Sayani Saidon stressed the importance of this review, citing the elevated risk of physical injuries among younger climbers compared to adult hikers.

"Given the heightened danger for children navigating tough terrains, it is time for the relevant department to investigate this matter thoroughly and openly, ensuring the safety of young climbers is prioritized," Saidon stated during an interview at Trojan Jetty, Tasik Banding.

The recommendation comes in the wake of the recent rescue operation involving six climbers, including two adults and four children, who went missing while undertaking the Trans Gerah Expedition in Gunung Gerah, Kelantan. The group, comprising Wan Ahmad Aslam Wan Zairudin, 39, his wife Siti Zulaiha Norizan, 39, and children Diya Raisha, 13, and Ahmad Raef, 9, were reported missing on August 29 after failing to meet their scheduled departure date of September 3.

They were eventually located safe and brought for medical examination at the Pos Kemar health clinic.
