Patrick Mahomes owns 3 sports teams: How did he build his Kansas City empire?

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will likely start in Monday night's season opener against the Denver Broncos, nine months after suffering a knee injury. Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed on Tuesday that Mahomes is expected to take the first snap, provided there are no unexpected complications in the coming days. Mahomes has been participating in all offseason and training camp practices, despite sitting out the three preseason games.

The Chiefs are coming off a 6-11 season, with Mahomes tearing both his ACL and LCL in a game against the Chargers on December 14. Mahomes spent the offseason in Kansas City, rehabbing at the team's facility and working with physical therapist Julie Frymyer. He was cleared to practice fully the week before training camp began and has been active in every preseason session.

Broncos coach Sean Payton cautioned that their defense needs to focus on Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs' offense. If left tackle Josh Simmons remains sidelined due to a back injury, rookie Khalil Benson will start in his place. Benson has gained significant playing time this summer and will be protecting Mahomes against Denver's strong pass rush.
