On Sheikh Abdullah’s 44th death anniversary, NC reclaims his political legacy through archival videos

On the 44th death anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the ruling National Conference (NC) refrained from formulating any policy statements and instead centered their remembrance of the party founder on showcasing his political legacy through streaming archival videos. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah paid their respects at the grave of Sheikh Abdullah, also known as "Baba-e-Qaum" and "Sher-e-Kashmir", in Nigeen, Srinagar.

The NC's senior leaders participated in special prayers at the graveyard. Reflecting on Sheikh Abdullah's enduring impact, Omar Abdullah described him as "a towering leader whose place in the history and collective memory of Jammu & Kashmir remains eternal". He also emphasized how the Sheikh’s memory lives on among the people of J&K through stories, memories, and emotions.

The party’s social media handles shared archival videos focusing on Sheikh Abdullah's political legacy. One such video depicted former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visiting the grieving Abdullahs in Srinagar and consoling the Sheikh’s wife. In a speech shared on social media, Dr. Farooq Abdullah highlighted Sheikh Abdullah's commitment to the dignity, rights, and aspirations of the J&K people.

He shared another video of the Sheikh, underscoring his dedication to the secular and inclusive identity of Jammu and Kashmir. NC leader Satish Sharma reiterated the party's mission to safeguard the rights of all people, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedom of religion, equality, and unity in diversity. Sharma recalled the significant Land Reforms Act implemented under Sheikh Abdullah's leadership, which empowered farmers and transformed the socio-economic landscape of J&K.
