New York failed to disclose what it knew on 'toxic air' after 9/11

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a trove of 170,000 documents on Tuesday, revealing the city's concealment of toxic air hazards in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. This disclosure precedes the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, tragedy, which claimed 2,977 lives, primarily in the collapse of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City.

According to a federal medical monitoring program, over 9,400 individuals have since died from illnesses linked to their exposure to toxic air. The mayor highlighted the documents' content, which detail what the city knew about the toxic air around Ground Zero, when they became aware, and the measures taken to mitigate liability.

These documents are the result of an agreement with 9/11 Health Watch, a victims' advocacy group that sued the city to make the records public. The group's director, Benjamin Chevat, emphasized that for 25 years, four mayoral administrations kept this information from the public, the U.S. Congress, and the City Council, despite continuing to reassure the public that the air was safe.

When questioned about the names of officials who withheld information, Mamdani responded, "This goes across a multitude of those that New Yorkers have trusted." The mayor's office acknowledged that multiple individuals, including the public's trusted leaders, had lied about the air quality, leading to the illness of thousands of New Yorkers.

The release of 173,000 documents, with more to follow over the next year, may implicate former mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, both of whom were in office during and immediately after the attacks.
