N. Korea slams Japan-US-S. Korea drill as 'crucial threat'

North Korean Defense Minister Kim Song Gi has criticized a joint military drill between Japan, the United States, and South Korea as a dangerous security threat, according to state-run media. In a statement released Monday, the defense minister vowed to take strong countermeasures against the exercise, calling it a "dangerous offensive entity" that poses a significant threat to the stability of the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

The tripartite military cooperation, known as the Freedom Edge exercise, is set to run for five days and features real-time data sharing and synchronized coordination in maritime and aerial operations, with an emphasis on cyber defense.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the purpose of the exercise is to counter the nuclear and missile threats posed by North Korea. The defense minister also referred to the upcoming Orient Shield joint exercise involving Japan, the United States, and Australia, scheduled for later in September. This largest-ever exercise is expected to deploy U.S. Typhon missile launchers.

The North Korean defense minister's remarks came as part of a series of U.S.-led war demonstrations taking place without any gaps in time and space, according to the statement. The North Korean leader emphasized that their country will demonstrate their willingness to respond to enemy moves with more powerful and resolute action.

In a separate development, an annual bilateral military exercise between South Korea and the United States was shortened last month, despite an order from U.S. President Donald Trump. While the reduction was seen as a conciliatory gesture, North Korea dismissed the change as insufficient, maintaining its view that the allies harbor hostility toward the country. The Freedom Edge exercise is set to proceed as scheduled, with the U.S. military confirming the five-day timeline.
