Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing to visit Cambodia

Myanmar's coup leader and now civilian president, Min Aung Hlaing, will be visiting Cambodia in the near future, according to a statement from his office on Tuesday. This marks the next stage in his diplomatic efforts to alter his status as a pariah. The visit will see Min Aung Hlaing meet with the acting head of state, Hun Sen, and his son, the prime minister Hun Manet. The primary objective of the trip is to foster mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors like economic, cultural, and more.

Min Aung Hlaing's overthrow of the elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in a 2021 coup ended Myanmar's decade-long experiment with democracy, plunging the nation into civil war. Prior to becoming president in April, Myanmar's leaders were persona non grata in numerous foreign capitals following the coup. However, Min Aung Hlaing is currently undertaking a drive to secure regional recognition since assuming the presidency.

Retiring as military chief to assume the civilian role, Min Aung Hlaing conducted highly restricted elections that excluded rebel-held areas and barred Suu Kyi's party, punishing dissent with imprisonment. While democracy watchdogs labeled the vote as a sham, countries such as China, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos have welcomed Min Aung Hlaing during his recent trips since taking office.
