Mom found guilty of abuse for letting 5-year-old walk outside alone

Karyann Parkinson, a mother from Virginia, has been found guilty of child abuse after allowing her 5-year-old son, Samuel, to walk alone half a mile to a local pond. Over the summer, the mother permitted Samuel to collect goose feathers, instructing him to return home immediately. Upon witnessing Samuel's journey, a security guard from their gated community in Ford's Colony, Williamsburg, took issue with the child's independence and escorted him back home.

The guard informed Parkinson that children should not be left alone in the neighborhood, citing homeowners association rules. When the mother questioned the legality, the guard stated that if the activity wasn't against the rules, it would be considered against the law, prompting her police involvement.

Parkinson was subsequently charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and convicted, resulting in a six-month suspended sentence. She will also be placed on Virginia's child abuse and neglect registry for seven years, which will affect her ability to volunteer in her son's classroom until he reaches sixth grade. Virginia is among 13 states with a reasonable childhood independence law, intended to prevent overzealous state intervention in parental decisions.

Parkinson plans to appeal the conviction, with the decision expected in January. The mother's case has ignited a nationwide discussion on her parenting choices, with many mothers sharing similar experiences.
