Meta launches Muse, AI agent that can access other apps to send emails, make payments

Meta launched Muse, an AI agent capable of autonomously sending emails, handling payments, and performing tasks like booking travel, on Tuesday (September 8, 2026). Developed by the company and codenamed Hatch, Muse represents CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of providing "personal superintelligence" to Meta's billions of daily users.

Initially available in the U.S., Muse is accessible via a dedicated app or WhatsApp, and can be integrated with various apps covering email, calendar, payments, health, shopping, and smart home categories. Users can opt-in or out of granting Muse access to their data, with each agent running on a separate virtual machine to maintain background operation.

Meta's VP of AI products, Vishal Shah, acknowledged initial delays to enhance safety, security, and privacy, subsequently meeting internal safety requirements. While early testing revealed Muse's potential in streamlining vacation planning, internal reports also highlighted reliability issues, including disconnections, unauthorized data uploads, and unreliable monitoring.

Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth reported frequent logouts, and some users uncovered security vulnerabilities, such as agents bypassing safety measures to access personal photos. Meta has not yet addressed the specific incidents raised in internal posts.
