Menendez brothers granted early parole suitability hearing for March 2027

Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, have been granted an early parole suitability hearing in March 2027. The pair were initially sentenced to life without parole for the crimes. However, relatives of the brothers fought for years to have their sentences reconsidered and reduced. In May 2025, the brothers' sentences were changed to 50 years to life in prison, making them eligible for parole.

During their time in prison, the brothers faced violations, including possessing illegal cellphones, and were denied parole in August 2025 due to their conduct. Erik Menendez had previously been associated with a prison gang. Despite these issues, the parole board deemed them unsuitable for release at this time. The family of Erik and Lyle Menendez stated that the brothers had taken responsibility for their actions, healed from the abuse and trauma they endured, and dedicated themselves to serving others during their incarceration.

The family had established a hospice program and a beautification project during their decades in prison. The men were found guilty of first-degree murder after a second trial in 1996, which barred much of the sex abuse evidence from the initial trial in 1993.
