Meet four people who got the HIV prevention jab

Four individuals from diverse backgrounds have experienced the new HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir, in South Africa. The injection, which lasts for six months, offers near-perfect protection against HIV and eliminates the need for daily medication. Four users share their reasons for choosing this option over a daily HIV prevention pill, discussing factors such as pregnancy, pill fatigue, privacy, and financial considerations.

The first user, Precious Mafanga, a 39-year-old sex worker and mother of four from Langa, switched from taking a daily HIV prevention pill to the injection. She found the daily pill to be challenging due to the time and effort required to remember to take it consistently. With the injection, she only needs to visit the clinic twice a year, a significant relief for her busy schedule as a peer educator and sex worker.

Siviwe Gaika, a 24-year-old student from Gqeberha studying law at Nelson Mandela University, underwent the injection process three times before finally receiving her shot. She described the waiting period as a significant part of her experience, but ultimately, she recognizes the importance of the injection in preventing HIV. Gaika plans to encourage others, including her 17-year-old child, to get the injection.

The third user, a pregnant woman, emphasized the importance of the injection during pregnancy, as it provides protection for both the mother and the baby. She highlighted that the injection allows her to avoid the daily pill routine, which she found burdensome.

Lastly, a transgender woman shared her experience, explaining that the injection helps her feel more secure in her daily life, knowing that she has a reliable form of HIV prevention. She also noted that the injection aligns with her desire to keep her medical records private, as she does not want her HIV status to be known to others.

Overall, these four individuals highlight the practical benefits of the LEN injection, particularly for those facing daily challenges in adhering to HIV prevention medication. They emphasize the importance of the injection in protecting themselves and their communities from HIV, while also acknowledging the need for continued efforts to make LEN available across South Africa.
