Maritime industry expert urges clearer timelines for probes, says prolonged uncertainty hurts businesses

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Maritime industry professional Datuk Seri R. Jeyenderan has advocated for establishing clear timelines for corruption and misconduct investigations, arguing that extended probes without proper updates can cause uncertainty for those involved. He asserts that while investigators must have ample time to conduct comprehensive inquiries, there should also be a system to regularly inform complainants about progress and results within a reasonable timeframe.

This is especially significant in scenarios affecting businesses, government revenue, regulatory compliance, and Malaysia's maritime sector. Jeyenderan has received sporadic updates from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) since the investigation began in June, but has not received a written explanation, causing challenges in managing commercial decisions and operations.

Despite over 30 years of experience in the maritime field, the businessman found it difficult to comprehend the investigation's current status and any required additional information due to the lack of formal updates. Jeyenderan, who fully cooperated with MACC by providing requested documents, emphasized that his aim is not to interrupt or pressure investigators but to ensure efficient investigations with appropriate clarity for affected parties.

He stressed that setting timelines does not mean hastening investigations or compromising due process; rather, it ensures accountability while allowing investigators sufficient time to establish facts. Jeyenderan believes clear timelines, regular communication, and thorough documentation of outcomes can strengthen public trust in enforcement agencies, particularly in cases involving corruption, abuse of power, or revenue leakage.

He also believes a transparent approach will provide businesses and industry players with greater certainty while preserving the independence and discretion of enforcement agencies to conduct their investigations effectively.
