Low chance of Anak Krakatau ash reaching Malaysia, says MetMalaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — Malaysia faces the threat of extreme heat and dry weather from January to May 2027, with temperatures in some regions potentially soaring to 40°C, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department. The likelihood of this phenomenon, known as a Super El Nino, is now almost certain, based on forecasts from international climate model centres, reported Berita Harian.

Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, the department's director-general, explained that past Super El Nino episodes, such as those in 1997/1998 and 2015/2016, were marked by higher temperatures, dry conditions, and a heightened risk of haze, much like the current situation in Malaysia. Historical data reveals that the country's highest temperature during these periods reached 40.1°C at Chuping Meteorological Station in Perlis on April 9, 1998, and 39.3°C at Batu Embun Meteorological Station in Jerantut, Pahang on April 10, 2016.

The probability of the current El Nino intensifying beyond any recorded since 1950 stands at around 70%. This intensification could lead to elevated temperatures and heightened risk of heatwaves in northern and inland areas of the peninsula, as well as in inland Sabah and Sarawak during the period from the end of the North-east Monsoon in January to May 2027.

Dr Anip cautioned that these conditions could negatively impact health, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. He also highlighted the potential consequences on water resources, agriculture, and industries reliant on water supplies. Prolonged hot and dry weather could increase the risk of forest and peatland fires, leading to local and regional haze outbreaks.
