LIV Golf files for bankruptcy, with post-Saudi future uncertain

LIV Golf has filed for bankruptcy protection, marking a significant setback for the Saudi-backed league that had grand plans to compete against the PGA Tour. The company, which filed for bankruptcy in New Jersey, has secured $49.6 million in debtor-in-possession financing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, its primary financial backer. Despite this, LIV stated that it is engaged in "advanced discussions" with players to assume control of the business once it exits Chapter 11.

LIV made its debut in 2022, disrupting the golf world by securing top professionals at high salaries and introducing faster, more exciting tournament formats. The Saudi Arabian investment was instrumental in this transformation, with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) committing over $5 billion over four years. However, the Saudi government recently decided to halt funding for LIV as part of a shift towards more profitable investments.

This decision, reported in April, left LIV without additional financial support, leading to its current bankruptcy filing.

The absence of Saudi capital raises questions about the league's long-term viability. While some top golfers who joined LIV have returned to the PGA Tour, others remain committed to the new league, accepting settlements for their previous contract obligations and offers of ownership. However, securing new funding will be crucial for LIV's survival, especially as the league grapples with the financial implications of its Saudi investors' withdrawal.
