Limited opportunities driving engineers out of Ghana – IET GH

Engr. Wonder Salami Davor, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana (IET-GH), has expressed worry over a rising number of engineers leaving the country due to a dearth of prospects to apply their skills. During a ceremony for new members on September 8, Ing. Davor pointed out that despite Ghanaian engineers having the capacity to handle complex projects, they are rarely given the necessary opportunities to do so in the country.

He questioned why foreign professionals are frequently employed instead of local engineers, given their proven competence. Ing. Davor warned that Ghana risks losing skilled professionals if suitable opportunities are not provided for them locally. He emphasized that investing in their training and certification, only to have them leave, would result in a loss of technical expertise that could benefit the country's development.

In his address to new inductees, Ing. Davor called for innovation, integrity, and sustainable development in their practice. He urged them to design solutions that directly address Ghana's challenges rather than simply creating something new for its own sake. Professor Julius Cudjoe Ahiekpor, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Kumasi Technical University, also stressed the importance of integrity in the engineering profession, highlighting it as a fundamental responsibility rather than a personal choice.
