King Oyo Burial Set for September 12, 2026

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro will be laid to rest on September 12, 2026, exactly 31 years after his coronation. The 34-year-old monarch passed away on August 27, 2026, in Dallas, Texas, due to complications from aggressive brain cancer. He ascended to the Tooro throne at the age of three following his father's death in 1995, becoming the world's youngest reigning monarch. His 31-year reign concluded with his death in Texas.

The casket carrying King Oyo's remains departed Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on September 2, 2026, with nine mourners, including Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Komuntale. After stops in Amsterdam and Nairobi, the remains arrived at Entebbe International Airport on September 4, 2026. President Yoweri Museveni, as chief mourner, received the body and laid a wreath before the casket.

King Oyo's remains have been at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City since the burial, a site where generations of Tooro kings have been interred. A nine-day mourning period began immediately after the body arrived, with nightly prayers. The casket was flown by military helicopter to Kyegegwa District before a road procession through Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, and Kabarole districts to Fort Portal City. The route was modified to allow local mourners to pay respects along the Mubende-Fort Portal highway.

President Museveni appointed Gender Minister Gen Henry Tumukunde to oversee burial arrangements and address any issues. The Babiito royal clan led by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi is responsible for the traditional rites and preparations. A 21-member committee is managing the succession process. The next Omukama's identity may be revealed during the burial.
