John Malkovich Drops Out of ‘The Music Critic’ in Israel After Press Release Attributed False Quotes

Renowned actor John Malkovich has withdrawn his participation in a planned 2027 performance of "The Music Critic" in Tel Aviv, Israel, following a misleading press release that falsely attributed quotes to him. The satirical theatrical-musical, created and written by Russian-German violinist and composer Aleksey Igudesman, was set to take place on April 13 at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium.

The erroneous statement, published in The Jerusalem Post on September 5, incorrectly attributed to Malkovich statements praising his forthcoming return to Israel and expressing solidarity with the audience. The claim was initially published by The Hollywood Reporter and subsequently removed, with The Jewish Post issuing a clarification on the error.

Malkovich's representative confirmed that the actor never made the quoted remarks and that he was not consulted prior to the publication. In response to the false assertion, Malkovich expressed his disappointment, stating that the inaccurate quotes were not reflective of his feelings and that their attribution was unacceptable. Despite his cancellation, Malkovich remains committed to exercising his artistic freedom and reiterated his belief in the power of culture and beauty to bridge conflicts and promote understanding across diverse backgrounds.
