Japan eyes allowing N. Korean athletes to enter nation for Asian Games

TOKYO, Kyodo reports that Japan is contemplating admitting North Korean athletes and related personnel to the country prior to the commencement of the Asian Games scheduled for later this month. Presently, Japan has a blanket ban on North Koreans entering the nation, a restriction stemming from sanctions against Pyongyang's nuclear and missile development endeavors. However, this restriction has been waived for the duration of sports events.

The two countries, which lack diplomatic ties, are set to host the Asian Games from September 19 to October 4 in Aichi and Nagoya. According to a North Korea-affiliated source, the delegation comprising the Sept. 19-Oct. 4 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games is anticipated to include around 180 participants. It would mark one of the most substantial delegations North Korea has sent to a sporting event in Japan.

North Korea boasts several athletes who are considered preferences for gold medal victories in weightlifting and wrestling. Additionally, its women's football team has been honing its skills, culminating in the Asian Champions League title acquisition by a Pyongyang-based club in May. Moreover, two Korean residents residing in Japan who are athletes are also projected to join the North Korean delegation for the Asian Games.

These Games, typically held every four years, will see the return of North Korea after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
