Iran says ‘significant progress’ in talks with Oman over Hormuz

Tehran, Iran - Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Tuesday that there has been significant progress in discussions with Oman regarding the management of the crucial Strait of Hormuz. In an interview with Japan's foreign minister, Araghchi provided an update on the state of the ongoing talks, revealing that an agreement on a temporary shipping route has been achieved.

Hormuz, a strategically important waterway, has been under Iranian control since the beginning of the conflict with the United States on February 28th. The United States has responded by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Most recently, President Donald Trump stated that American forces have assisted in the passage of an average of 30 ships per night through the strait.

However, Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, has contested this, claiming that the US is attempting to assist five or six vessels each night, many of which are subsequently damaged.

During the talks, Iran has insisted on several conditions before the strait can return to its pre-war state of unrestricted navigation. These demands include the lifting of US oil sanctions, the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, and the removal of the maritime blockade on Iranian ports. In addition, Iran has proposed the introduction of service fees for vessels using the strait, a demand that has been vehemently opposed by Washington and neighboring nations.

Recent reports suggest that a deal between Oman and Iran could potentially be finalized within the next few days. However, both sides have reaffirmed that the strait will not reopen until the United States adheres to Iran's demands.
