Insect industry opens new Chuncheon factory

Korea's first insect industry hub, under a national development initiative, inaugurated on Tuesday in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. This new facility promises to serve as a vital resource for protein-based feed, health supplements, agricultural waste treatment, and job creation. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed the opening of the facility on the same day.

The joint venture between the provincial and city governments has been built with an investment of 20 billion won ($15 million), equally shared by the central and local governments. The construction of the complex started in 2023 and spans a 23,815-square-meter site.

At the heart of the facility is a smart factory farm that handles all core operations, incorporating AI and robots to monitor insect growth in real-time. Automated systems control temperature, humidity, and feeding, ensuring optimal conditions for the insects. The farm is capable of producing up to 1,000 tons of mealworms annually.

The complex also includes 33 rental smart farms that provide breeding insects to the main factory farm, contributing to its production capacity. Additionally, a dedicated building within the facility is designed for maintenance and support.

The insect industry's new hub in Chuncheon is set to bolster the nation's efforts to diversify protein sources and address various challenges, from agricultural waste treatment to job creation.
