India, China Corps Commander talks went on for 2 days: MEA

OTTAWA – The Carney government has engaged in deeper relations with Beijing, as reported by the Chinese government. They disclosed a candid and in-depth exchange on military issues with Canadian officials. This marks the fifth defence co-ordination dialogue between the two countries, following years of diplomatic strain.

Canada's defence department confirmed the report days later, despite the government's policy of not publicizing working-level meetings by officials. The talks are believed to be aimed at protecting Canadian interests.

Critics, notably Conservatives, have expressed concerns over the potential for military cooperation with China. The situation resonated with Canadian military officials who expressed a desire for more open dialogue with their Chinese counterparts in early 2024. This effort was reportedly hindered by Canada sending navy ships through the Taiwan Strait.
