IMC steps up fight against organised crime linked to migration

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration (IMC) has ramped up efforts to combat organized crime associated with migration vulnerabilities. In a recent address to the media in Pretoria, IMC Chairperson Mmamoloko Kubayi outlined the intensification of multi-disciplinary law enforcement operations targeting illegal border crossings and illegal mining activities. These operations are part of a broader strategy to address the various forms of organized crime that stem from migration issues.

Since the beginning of the year, IMC has reported significant progress in its fight against illegal migration-related activities. Over 300 individuals have been arrested for violating migration laws, according to Kubayi. The committee has registered 205 cases, leading to the arrest of 354 individuals. These arrests are part of a larger effort to ensure accountability among those breaking the law by engaging the law enforcement agencies and the criminal justice system.

Kubayi emphasized the importance of these actions, stating that they are crucial in ensuring that those engaged in illegal activities are held responsible. The IMC's efforts are part of a comprehensive migration management strategy aimed at tackling the challenges posed by illegal migration, including the problems associated with hijacked and abandoned vehicles—a growing concern in the region.
