Google is making sideloading harder, but Android fans aren’t giving it up

Installing apps from sources beyond the Google Play Store, known as sideloading, has become a common practice for many Android users. These users often download apps from alternative stores like GitHub and F-Droid, which offer unique features not found on the Play Store. For instance, the Breezy Weather app, similar to Pixel Weather, provides additional functionality. However, sideloading can be a more challenging and time-consuming process compared to downloading apps from the Play Store.

Google is taking steps to make sideloading more difficult, introducing additional hurdles to prevent scammers from targeting vulnerable users. These measures include a new series of checks, a 24-hour delay before installation, and a mandatory phone restart. While these actions aim to protect users, they also make it more cumbersome for power users who regularly install safe apps from trusted external sources.
