Ex-DSS DG Daura: How sycophants in Buhari’s govt betrayed him

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, has criticized some individuals in former President Muhammadu Buhari's government for betraying his trust. Daura, in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claimed that Buhari's administration endured challenges due to the presence of sycophants who failed to meet the expectations placed upon them.

He emphasized that personal relationships and trust should not be the sole basis for appointments, as competence should also be a key factor in evaluating candidates for public office. Buhari held office from 2015 to 2023, facing criticism over security issues, economic struggles, unemployment, and other governance problems, while his supporters argued that his administration implemented reforms and policies aimed at addressing structural challenges.

Daura stated that he was aware of the misbehavior of certain individuals, but denied being part of a powerful cabal that controlled the administration. He highlighted the importance of separating personal loyalty from suitability for sensitive government positions and advised leaders to base their decisions on a candidate's abilities, character, and capacity.
