Evacuate to forestall any eventuality – GWL urges Weija residents ahead of spillage

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has called on residents in unauthorized areas along the Weija River to evacuate immediately in preparation for the resumption of spillage from the Weija Dam. Stanley Martey, GWL's Chief Manager and Head of Public Relations, made the announcement on Joy FM’s Midday News.

The dam spillage is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, September 9, as the rising water levels necessitate the release of excess water to maintain the dam's integrity. Martey emphasized that those residing downstream, especially along the river course leading to the estuary, must comply with evacuation orders issued by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to safeguard their lives and property.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 8, Martey expressed frustration over residents' reluctance to comply with evacuation advice. He implored them to heed the warnings, highlighting the importance of following guidance from authorities, regardless of their religious beliefs. "Whether they are Christians, Muslims or belong to any other faith, there are teachings that encourage people to listen when they are being guided," he said. "We are urging residents to listen and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves."

Martey explained that the initial spillage will be minimal, with one gate to be opened. However, additional gates may be opened if water levels persist in rising. The extent and duration of the spillage are uncertain, dependent on the volume of water entering the dam. Consequently, residents are urged to cooperate with authorities and relocate to safer areas before the spillage commences.
