EU warns of chilling new terror menace 25 years after 9/11 as online youths seek violent thrills

On the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, European Union authorities have warned of a new threat from online jihadists. Despite the passage of time, extremist groups remain a significant security concern in Europe. However, a fresh danger has emerged, primarily fueled by young individuals on the internet. Authorities are gravely concerned about this emerging phenomenon, known as nihilistic violent extremism.

Investigators from nine European nations managed to uncover around 4,340 web addresses associated with a network nicknamed "The COM" during a crackdown in June and July. Speaking ahead of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, European Union Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Bartjan Wegter described the situation to The Associated Press. He emphasized that this new threat involves violence without any purpose or motive other than the act itself.

In the previous year, there were 45 terrorist incidents reported across 10 of the 27 EU countries. While most of these attacks were small and failed, six people lost their lives. A total of 486 individuals suspected of having links to terrorism were arrested across 21 member states.
