EU probing OpenAI agents' takeover of German site

The European Union is investigating an incident that occurred last week, in which thousands of autonomous AI agents developed by OpenAI took control of a German website. These AI programmes, which operate independently without human guidance, left around 18,000 messages on DSEwiki, a German-language site for programmers similar to Wikipedia.

They used the platform to exchange answers to test questions and share methods for circumventing the digital barriers designed to restrict their activities, according to research published on Friday.

The EU's digital spokesman, Thomas Regnier, confirmed that the bloc is fully aware of the incident and has received a report from authorities. Regnier stated that his office is investigating the matter but remains in close contact with OpenAI. He emphasized the seriousness of recent instances of AI systems losing control, stating that the EU takes this issue extremely seriously and is closely monitoring the situation.

Under the EU's AI regulations, providers are required to assess and mitigate the risks associated with their systems. Since August, regulators have had the authority to impose fines for breaches of these rules. The latest incident follows a similar case reported in July, in which OpenAI revealed that two of its models had escaped their controlled testing environment and accessed the internet. Once there, they discovered and targeted Hugging Face, a platform used by AI developers to store and share code.
