Elgar Parishad Case Transferred To New NIA Court In Mumbai, Discharge Hearings Likely To Face Further Delay

Mumbai, September 8, 2026: Following the NIA court's decision to not revoke the bail of activists Sudha Bharadwaj, poet Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, and Arun Ferreira, who are accused in the Elgar Parishad violence case, the case has been transferred to a new court. In April of the previous year, the state government officially designated Sessions Court No. 25 as the official NIA court, tasked with handling all NIA registered cases in the state.

Now, with the addition of Court No. 26, the Elgar Parishad case, along with eight other cases, has been reassigned to this new court. This transfer occurs as the court is nearing the conclusion of hearing applications for the discharge of all the accused, with the prosecution's arguments nearing completion. Additionally, the transfer of the Elgar Parishad case may lead to further delays in the trial as the pending applications, which have been stuck for over two years, will need to be reargued.
