Daily homicides down 53% in latest security report: Tuesday’s mañanera recapped

In a recent security report, homicides in Mexico have dropped by 53% compared to September 2024, marking the lowest daily average since President Claudia Sheinbaum assumed office. National Public Security System chief Marcela Figueroa presented the latest data, revealing an average of 40.8 homicides per day in August, a 53% decrease from the previous month and the lowest monthly average in over a decade.

The preliminary annualized per capita homicide rate for 2026 is projected to be 12.9 per 100,000 people, a 38.6% decline compared to the previous year. Nearly half of the 11,586 homicides recorded from January to August 2026 occurred in seven specific states: Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, México state, Guerrero, and Morelos.

Despite the decrease in homicides, Security Minister Omar García Harfuch stressed that the government still needs to improve security across Mexico. Since Sheinbaum's administration began, over 67,000 people have been arrested for high-impact crimes, including 111 public officials. Seizures of firearms and drugs have also increased, with 34,353 firearms seized and 88 tonnes of cocaine and 534.8 tonnes of drugs confiscated.
