[COVER STORY] Should Korea join Trump's war on Iran?

Experts are advising that Korea should participate in international efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, but recommend that its role should be limited to noncombat missions. This advice comes from a desire to maintain a delicate balance with its alliance with the United States, protect its energy and maritime interests, and uphold the freedom of navigation on the high seas.

According to Min Jeong-hun, a professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, Korea will need to make some contribution to these efforts, given its close relationship with the United States. However, Jeong-hun stressed that Korea must carefully consider its involvement to ensure that it does not be perceived as joining the war with Iran directly.

He added that Korea has a strong justification for contributing, considering its direct interest in maintaining freedom of navigation and stable energy supplies. Approximately 60 percent to 70 percent of Korea's crude oil imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making this a crucial factor in their decision.

Similarly, Jang Ji-hyang, a senior research fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, also agreed that participation would be consistent with Korea's interests. Jang noted that the country's involvement should be carefully managed and carefully considered to avoid any misperceptions of entering a direct military conflict with Iran. The experts' advice highlights the complex balancing act that Korea must navigate in order to contribute meaningfully to international efforts while safeguarding its own vital interests.
