Convoy Blockade: Call Governors to Order, Obi Tells IGP, DSS DG

Nigerian Democratic Congress candidate Peter Obi has implored the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services to step in following a blockade that thwarted his planned visit to Yelewata community in Benue State. Obi arrived in Makurdi on Tuesday morning, intending to express condolences to families affected by a June 13, 2025, armed attack and provide support to the victims.

However, his convoy was halted by a group of youths near the airport, who chanted "Obi go back, Obi go back" and threw stones at security personnel who were present. After the incident, Obi and his team returned to the airport and left the state without accompanying their planned visit. Describing the incident as "ridiculous" and "very, very worrisome," Obi said he intended to visit the community as part of his nationwide tour to understand the struggles of Nigerians.

With over 270 fatalities reported in the Yelewata attack, he visited the area to console families and extend his support. Avoiding a confrontation, Obi decided against pushing through the blockade, fearing violence and endangerment of lives. He appealed to the security agencies and state governors to maintain peace during political activities across the country.

Obi urged the 2027 presidential campaign to focus on issues affecting Nigerians, such as insecurity, hunger, poverty, and killings, rather than violence and intimidation.
